Why Cougars Will Prevail by Linda Franklin
Author Linda Franklin, writing for More Magazine, establishes why Cougars will prevail, regardless of any criticism thrown their way [http://www.more.com/7846/22642-why-cougars-will-prevail.]
But, why the rise in Cougarism, and why now? I have a theory that some of today's Cougars were teens in the 1960s, and became part of the anti-establishment ideologies of that era. The "Make-Love-Not-War" generation that saw the rise of 1960s counterculture said, "Why," and then "Why not," to previously held beliefs.
Then, in droves, young (often 18-20) women left home (with its laws and restrictions), and married boys our age or a few years older -- so we could be independent grown ups. Hah! We were really just babies, marrying young and having babies of our own. Then, we had to grow up. Fast. Responsibly. Women who married young in the 1960s lost a bit of their youth.
I call this the Tiger Woods Syndrome. While I'm totally opposed to Tiger and his whoring around (which caused harm to his wife, family, and friends) -- and I do not compare what Tiger's done to responsible Cougar relationships, there is one comparison between the Tiger and Cougars that I do believe. We lost, and we're trying to regain, part of our youth. The Tiger was (and maybe still is) just not doing the right thing by chasing tail other than his own!
When I met SC (Sweet Cub) I immediately knew he was younger than me. (Hell, now it seems like everyone's younger than me!) But, after recently severing a depressed and depressing relationship I guess I was looking for someone with less baggage who would be fun and help me feel better (and younger, and prettier) about myself. And there you have it! SC was emotionally and physically accessible. He had no relationships or relationship issues. He made no demands on me or my time. And he made me feel younger and happier than before. It kind of was a return to the simple and sweet years I missed from my youth.
While feeling good about ourselves, SC and I never hurt anyone. We had and still have an equality-based trusting relationship. So...
WHY IS IT THAT...
People (especially other women) are so frightened / disgusted / critical of Cougar/Cub relationships? Curious to know your thoughts.

My 85-year-old mother was a cougar. She was 8 years older than my dad. She used to say old Mom’s Mabley’s words, “The only thing an old man can do is tell me where to find a young one.” LOL
ReplyDeleteWhen I was dating, I felt the older guys (5 years or more) were trying to control me. They wanted to “teach” me this and “show me how to do” that. Well, at that time, I just wanted to have fun. Plus, they were over their “fun” days and wanted to settle down. NOT!
I found that younger guys were enjoying life and weren’t all stuck on “I’m tired now. I just want to settle down.” Now, at that time, “older” meant 35-40.
